“The Netherlands offers so many opportunities for personal development and for shaping your future! It gives me confidence in life.”

Some three years ago Miao Wang came to the Netherlands to study. Her first choice as a place to study and live was Groningen – drawn there by the picturesque photos of the Martini tower, the rural surroundings and blue skies. However, after eight months of her International Business Management studies, Miao decided that she did not really have it in her to be a business woman. “A girl friend of mine who studied in Eindhoven convinced me that this would be the place for me to begin a new study. While I have a passion for literature, European history and the history of art, I opted for the higher vocational (hbo) Engineering course at Fontys University of Applied Sciences. You see, I also love Mathematics!”

“Many foreign students choose the Netherlands because of the career opportunities.”

“Evidently my preliminary training was a perfect precursor to Dutch education. What strikes me is how friendly and respectful the lecturers are. They don’t concern themselves with your personal life. Which is not the case in China.” Miao is pleased that she can shape her own life in the Netherlands. “There are just so many opportunities and possibilities to develop in both the personal and professional sense!”

There are also plenty of jobs that students can do on the side and it is easy to find work, according to Miao. “I chose to do voluntary work at Fact Foundation, part of the Innovation Lab of Eindhoven University of Technology. I clean up the database there. It’s nice, interesting work, especially since the lab is working on developing environmentally-friendly solutions. It appeals to me even more because my mother studied environmental science.”

Miao expects to be able to find a job pretty quickly when she graduates as an Engineer. “I see myself working in engineering for a number of years, in the Netherlands. But there are also plenty of other things I’d like to do. Like owning a radio station or being the curator of a museum!”

Miao has a lot of foreign friends in Eindhoven and in other Dutch cities, too. “Half of my friends are Chinese. And half of them chose to study in the Netherlands to gain a nice experience abroad while the other half chose the Netherlands because they are consciously focused on their careers and futures.”

“Good facilities, a good infrastructure, a relaxed atmosphere … Living in Eindhoven is great.”

Miao is a bit homesick now and then but she has really taken to her new home. “I find it really relaxed living in Eindhoven. Eindhoven has all the facilities of a city but the atmosphere of a village. The tempo of life here is not so hectic. There is peace and quiet to be found. And what I like about it is the small things, like chocolate or the fact that restaurants are smoke-free. And while I would advise newcomers to learn the language, it is really helpful that the Dutch are willing to switch to English for you.” With shopping as a hobby, a partner who lives in Wageningen and a girl friend in Utrecht, Miao is often on the road. And she has only good things to say about the Dutch infrastructure. “You can take a train or car and be in another city or even in Belgium or Germany in no time!”
