“There’s a very amicable atmosphere between colleagues in Brainport. Group performance is favoured over individualistic performance, nurturing an open professional culture.”

As a project leader at VitrOmics Healthcare Services, Savi likes working in teams, in collaboration with other businesses in the area, including PamGene International and Notox in Den Bosch, and Catharina Ziekenhuis in Eindhoven.

“What is special is that the responsibilities at work are challenging, and yet it is possible to build one’s career without sacrificing an active social life. I am better able to balance career and home, since there is flexibility of working hours, and enough time to dedicate to my family.”

Savi doesn’t only know Brainport as an expat, but also as an entrepreneur. Together with her husband she owns an internationally active consultancy company, Sun Island, which is strategically based in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, from where the E.U, U.S. and Asia are more easily accessible. She thinks expats who are dreaming of starting their own company will find Brainport to be a favourable environment for entrepreneurs. “You don’t need a huge capital investment to be able to start a company, and there’s plenty of help and advice available to entrepreneurs – through the chamber of commerce (KvK) for example. Many banks also have special business departments where you can take care of your financial and insurance needs all in one place.”

“My daughter used to cycle to school by herself. The roads are safe enough.”

When Savi joined the Brainport region with her family in 2003, there was little information available about the area. “You can look up anything on the Internet nowadays, but back then we didn’t know what to expect. There was really only one major, decisive reason for us to settle down here: the presence of an affordable, subsidized and international school in Eindhoven.” She chose to live near the International Secondary School so that her older daughter could bike to school alone. “This is possible in Eindhoven because of special bicycle lanes. Anyway, it’s not a metropolis where you just get lost in all the frenzy. Regional traffic is also quite okay. That’s why, in general, my office in Den Bosch in not very far by road.”

After settling down in Eindhoven, Savi gained more and more appreciation for the city and the area. She happily advertises it: “It’s a great environment for expats with families. Eindhoven is well-organized and comfortable with all its facilities, and on top of that it’s a very ‘green’ city. You can get anywhere speaking English. You notice that this area has really capitalized on the presence of a large, international community. There are many IT and knowledge workers from abroad working here, which is why you’ll also find various expat networks. I’m a member of an Indo-Dutch association for example, and I’m also in a women’s network centred on the idea of combining career with children.”
